Photo by RoxandaBearIn the grand tradition of several previous baby animal naming polls, the National Zoo has opened up voting on a name for its new baby girl gorilla. With a promise that the name that gets the most votes will be chosen, an announcement will follow mid-month. That doesn’t give us much time to make sure the right name is selected.
Here are the three choices, which have origins in different African languages.
- Keyah (KAY-yah), which the Zoo says means “good health.”
- Kibibi (kee-BEE-bee), meaning “little lady.”
- Kipenzi (kee-PEHN-zee), which means “loved one.”
Regardless of whether you think D.C. residents should be so presumptuous as take away the job of naming their daughter from Baraka and Mandara (c’mon, couldn’t they just sign what they want the name to be?), the winner here is clear. Kibibi is just too much fun to say. Heck, it’s even fun to type. Vote for Kibibi!
