Comedienne Wanda Sykes returned to Washington this weekend to deliver the ever-fraught White House Correspondents Dinner host’s comedy routine. Sykes grew up in the D.C. area, and famously worked as a procurement officer for the National Security Agency before launching her stand-up career.

How did she do? Somewhere in between Craig Ferguson and Stephen Colbert. She definitely got some good lines in there. Our favorite, spoken directly to President Obama: “It’s funny to me that [the media] have never caught you smoking, but they always catch you with your shirt off. I know you’re into this transparency thing, but I don’t need to see your nipples.”

But conservatives are reportedly miffed about her attacks on Rush Limbaugh. “Maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight,” she said, later adding, in response to the radio host having said that he hopes the Obama administration fails: “I hope his kidneys fail.”

Incidentally, The Root’s Dayo Olopade caught up with Sykes afterward, and she apparently apologized for failing to make a Marion Barry joke. A shame, indeed.

What did you think of Sykes’ performance? Funny, meh, or went too far?
