>> Transformer opens a thought provoking exhibit that challenges traditional notions of gender. Domesticated: Men and the Domestic Interior opens Saturday, with a curator and artist talk at 4 p.m. followed by a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

>> Art Enables, the studio and gallery for emerging artists with developmental and/or mental disabilities, opens their doors for a studio show filled with new works on Saturday. Go for the wine and cheese reception starting at 3 p.m. and stay for the Bay Players Experimental Music Collective, which starts at 4:30 p.m.

>> Mid City Artists will open their studio doors this weekend. Scope out which studios to visit by meeting the artists at the opening reception Friday, 5 to 8 p.m. at the Coldwell Banker at 1607 17th Street NW. Studios are open 12 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For specific times check the map of participating studios.

>> We missed this last week, but FOTOBAMA: Picturing the President opened at the Newseum May 7. A collaboration between the Newseum and FOTOWEEK DC, the exhibit features 100 professional and amateur photographs, chosen from a field of more than 1,500, that are related to the historic presidency of Barack Obama. The FOTOBAMA winners were announced on Thursday, April 30 – day 100 of the Obama presidency – and include two former DCist Exposed winners.

>> Friday night, get ready for some art and dancing at Critical Mass, a one-night exhibit and dance party hosted by DCist Heather Goss’s Ten Miles Square and Civilian Art Projects. See work from over 20 area artists and then dance the night away with DJs KC and Nite Krawler. 9 p.m. $5.

>> Saturday is chock full of arts celebrations in Prince George’s County. Be sure to check out the Mount Rainier Day Festival and the Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival, including 12×12, a group exhibit opening at the Lustine Center, which includes work by DCist contributor Lynne Venart. The Gateway Arts District will also host open studio tours of over 100 artists. The self guided tour will showcase artists throughout the four municipalities of Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville. 12 to 5 p.m. Free shuttle bus service from West Hyattsville metro.
