Happy Memorial Day, D.C. As we pointed out earlier this weekend, news makers and news recorders are taking things easy this weekend. Hopefully, you’re similarly preparing to fire up the grill well in advance of rain showers which will likely happen this afternoon. But if, for whatever reason, you’re voluntarily or compulsorily stuck in front of a monitor today, here’s some news to get your day rolling.

As a reminder, Metro is running on a Sunday schedule today; here’s the scheduled street closings for today’s Memorial Day parade.

Solve for x: 12x + 84 = 252: Too early? Not for Maryland high school students, who are required be able to solve the above equation as part of new state tests. The Post reports, though, that state officials have no idea how many students will pass said tests in algebra, English, biology and government. In fact, the verdict on the High School Assessments is still completely out: no one’s really sure if they were worth the effort or not. (Oh, yeah, x = 14.)

Speaking of Schools and Difficult Mathematical Scenarios: The Post also has the inside beef on Michelle Rhee’s latest problem: trying to figure out exactly how many kids will be attending D.C. Public Schools next fall. Rhee is projecting a slight increase in students; the Council on the other hand, believes that a sharp uptick in charter school enrollment means Rhee’s figures are off-base — not least Council Chair Vincent Gray, who says of Rhee’s guesses: “I am going to go out this afternoon and look to see if there are 3,000 parachutes coming out of the sky.”

Briefly Noted: Md. woman searching for a kidney on Facebook…Breaking: Regional unemployment rates will be unpredictable in the short term…Heater installed at Fenty’s triathalon training pool…UVA wins ACC title in baseballOffice vacancies spiking in Alexandria…Demand for subsidized meals at schools rising as schools struggle to balance food budgets.

This Day In DCist: Not much to see here, people; it was a Sunday. (But do feel free to take a peek at what yours truly and Kriston Capps have been up to on recent weekends.)
