Now that we’re several months removed from March Madness and entering a dead period for college sports, any sort of NCAA-related news helps kill the time before college football kicks off. I mean, Strike Bethesda was showing the College Wakeboarding Championships on the CBS College Sports network on its screens, for crying out loud. It. Is. That. Slow.

Anyway, at least we now know who will play in this year’s BB&T Classic, the DMV’s very own college basketball invitational. The Washington Times reports that Maryland will take on Villanova in an ACC/Big East match-up, while George Washington will play Navy. Both games will be held at the Verizon Center on Sunday, December 6.

The Terps/’Nova game is certainly noteworthy. The Wildcats — who fell to North Carolina in the Final Four a scant three months ago — will be one of the preseason teams to beat next season, as well as one of the more prominent teams the BB&T has hosted in recent years. The suburban Philadelphia school’s proximity to D.C. will help boost attendance from visiting fans, as well as alumni that reside in the area.

Maryland, who also returned to the NCAA Tournament last season after a one-year absence, meanwhile waits with baited breath on star guard Greivis Vasquez’s decision on whether or not to return for his senior season. The Venezuelan recently declared for the NBA draft, but did not sign an agent, leaving the door open for his return to the team. We’ll know soon — Vasquez has but until June 15 to withdraw from the draft. With a weak draft class, his decision will likely come down to the wire.
