>> Looking for a movie to see? Check in with our critic’s picks, which include special screenings of Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2 at the AFI tonight and Saturday, with an Electric Boogaloo party following Saturday night’s show. Check the schedule for showtimes.

>> The Hip-Hop Theater Festival and Words Beats & Life have brought back Freshest of All Time, a b-boy battle featuring 25 break dancing crews from around the world. Registration for the battle begins at 3 p.m. and closes at 6, with $1,000 prize money up for grabs. The event itself, which is free, starts with a film screening of Beat Street at 6 p.m., with the competition kicking off right at 8 p.m. At the St. Stephen and Incarnation Church located at 1525 Newton Street NW.

>> Civilian Art Projects opens two new shows on Friday night. Everything Must Go features Ryan Hill’s conceptual work that translates digital media from Google, Flickr, and YouTube onto paper. In the second gallery, a group show asks what it means to be living in a world that constantly requires an Upgrade. 7 to 9 p.m. Downstairs from Civilian, Touchstone opens Seven Takes, featuring work by each of their new represented artists. 6 to 8:30 p.m.

>> Several prominent acts from the Baltimore/D.C. area will take part in “Neo-Soul Night” at Carter Barron Ampitheater. On deck for the evening are Tamika Jones, Fertile Ground, Wayna, and Deborah Bond. Free (but ticket needed), 7:30 p.m.

>> Saadat Awan, drummer for Three Stars alums The Cassettes, has started a monthly bhangra party under the moniker DJ Beta-G. His event, called the U.S. Department of Bhangra, will have its latest iteration tonight at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge, and will feature another local, DJ Miss Modular, as the opener. 10 p.m. $5 with proceeds going to Architecture for Humanity

>> D.C. favorites The Dance Party nearly always bring a great crowd when they play around town, and they’ve loaded Friday night’s bill at the 9:30 Club with fellow (and recent) Three Stars alums Ra Ra Rasputin, as well as NYC’s Tigercity and catchy local popsters Casper Bangs. Doors at 8 p.m., $15.

SATURDAY:

>> Remember summer Saturdays at the Corcoran are free, so head over to see the last day of Maya Lin’s exhibit Systematic Landscapes, along with the new William Eggleston retrospective.

>> Is it a sign of the economic times that tickets to the big, big, big Elton John and Billy Joel show at Nationals Park (the first ever concert at the stadium) are still available today? Click here if you’re willing to shell out for the $182 tickets, as it looks like the “cheaper” $102 seats are gone. 7:30 p.m.

SUNDAY:

>> It what’s become a summer ritual, the “Rock The Bells” tour will be making a stop at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The list of performers is massive. The Roots, Common, and D.C.’s Tabi Bonney are definites for this show. $51-$176, 11 a.m.

>> Like trivia nights, but looking for a new venue? Commonwealth in Columbia Heights started its own Sunday night pub quiz a few weeks ago, with a solid grand prize for the winning team: half off your bar tab for the night, plus an additional $50 gift certificate for use at a future date. Trivia starts at 7 p.m., hosted by Looking Glass Lounge’s Dalton Hirshorn. The Heights Life has a review of the event.
