The D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency has issued a Heat Alert for today, while the National Weather Service prefers to call its recommendation a Heat Advisory. Whatever you call it, it’s hot as balls out there, and it’s only going to get hotter — highs are expected to reach 100° at some point today, with the heat index making it feel like 105°.

The Post’s heatwave story notes that since it hasn’t really been this hot yet this summer, the chances of people getting sick from the heat are even higher. Health officials have put out the following recommendations for staying cool and safe in the extreme weather:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Turn on the air-conditioner or fan.
  • Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight and loose-fitting clothes.
  • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside (at least SPF 15).
  • Limit exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.).
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Visit one of the District’s “Cooling Centers” or public swimming pools located throughout the city, if you do not have access to a cool-temperature location.
  • If you think a homeless person may need water or assistance, call the United Planning Organization at (202) 399-7093.
