ART: Tonight is the first night of the market at Arts on Foot, the annual festival in Penn Quarter (centered around F Street between 7th and 9th Street NW). This year’s Arts on Foot features an art market with 100 exhibitors, food and wine sampling, and an events stage with live performances and neighborhood showcases. The market runs today and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the festival itself is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Get more details here.

MOVIE: The DC Shorts Film Festival also kicks of tonight, this year featuring 100 films in 10 rotating showcases. Check the schedule for details. Tonight, two sets of screenings are planned at both the Landmark E Street Cinemas and the U.S. Navy Memorial’s Burke Theatre (701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., $10/$12.

MUSIC: Hugh Cornwell, former singer for UK punk legends The Stranglers, will perform solo material tonight in the Black Cat‘s backstage, with Dennis Kane opening (and celebrating a CD release). $12, doors 9 p.m.

READING: Jackie’s restaurant in Silver Spring is hosting an author event with Garrett Peck, who will read from and sign copies of his new book, “The Prohibition Hangover: Alcohol in America from Demon Rum to Cult Cabernet.” Peck will discuss American attitudes toward liquor, and mixologist Scott Palmer will present samples of Prohibition-inspired cocktails. $10.

JAZZ: Legendary bassist Ron Carter is back at Bohemian Caverns tonight for the start of a three-night stand of 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. Accompanying him will be pianist Mulgrew Miller and guitarist Russell Malone. Tickets are $40.
