Photo by Kyle WaltonGood morning, Washington. It’s more than a little bittersweet to be back in the confines of our offices this morning when it’s still so sunny and gorgeous out. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect weekend to have been strolling through street festivals or … staying inside to watch football. Well in retrospect, maybe that last one could have been better spent. But do enjoy the heavenly breezes and blue skies while you can – summer may feel like it’s still here, but fall is literally just a day away.
Report: D.C. Fire/EMS Has a Ways to Go: In an article in Sunday’s Examiner, Bill Myers shares the details of a new D.C. inspector general report on DC FEMS, noting that “the District’s emergency rescue team remains woefully unprepared to deal with citizens’ emergencies.” The family of David Rosenbaum agreed to drop their lawsuit against the city last year as long as the District ensured that their emergency response system dramatically improved. From the looks of this report, seems like the city has a ways to go on their end of that deal.
Embassies on Fire: D.C. firefighters were called to battle two blazes at two different embassy compounds in Washington over the weekend. The first was a kitchen fire on Saturday at the residence of the Chilean ambassador on Massachusetts Ave. One woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, and damage to the building was moderate. Then at about 3:30 a.m. last night, the Embassy of Gabon in Adams Morgan suffered from a large fire that began in the basement. No one was injured in that blaze, but the damage was relatively significant. Watch yer backs, diplomatic corps!
Still No ID on Body Found in Fire: Investigators still have not been able to identify the body that was discovered after a rowhouse fire in Capitol Heights on Saturday. The Post reports that authorities have so far only determined that the body is that of a black male. Prince George’s County detectives are investigating the death as a homicide.
Briefly Noted: Teen arrested in Friday night Southwest slaying … Prince George’s County Schools facing key vacancies … CSX seeking to run double-stacked freight trains through the District … Three shootings, only hours apart, in Lincoln Heights.
This Day in DCist: In 2007, Brad Pitt was hanging out in the Washington Post’s newsroom, and in 2006, we said farewell to the Pentagon hot dog stand.
