Chinatown’s famed Friendship Arch got a bit of a sprucing up this summer, and today city officials gathered to formally reintroduce the landmark.
The arch had been covered by scaffolding until recently while construction finished up, so we’re relieved to see the work that’s been done more or less kept the structure exactly as it was. The restoration of the 23-year-old arch was performed by the original designer and architects, Alfred Liu and AEPA Architects and Engineers. Some of the work they completed includes cleaning and repainting the entire structure, replacing the center panel with marble, repairing and replacing worn out decorations, reinstalling lighting, and replacing missing roof tiles.
“The necessary work ensures the Friendship Arch, affectionately known as the ‘Chinatown Arch,’ will be in top repair to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come,” D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said at the event.
