Nando’s Peri Peri offers some delicious chicken. The chain started out of South Africa, and began a northern and westward expansion. The first U.S. branch opened last year in Chinatown.
Their grilled chicken is moist with a flavor kissed with smoke from the grill. You also have a choice of sauces offering varying heats and flavors ranging from mild to x-tra x-tra hot, but I prefer the chicken naked. Without the sauce, the skin maintains a pleasing crispness, and a few of the sauces have a tendency to be overpowering.
And just a tip: the Dupont location is a little better at grilling their chicken than the Chinatown one. Still, the Chinatown location is a classier alternative to Chipotle. And be sure to get a side order of halloumi cheese, a hard grilled Greek cheese that has a flavor that reminds me of bacon.
Nando’s Peri Peri is located at 819 7th Street NW and 1210 18th Street NW
Small Bites
Michelle Burger
Good Stuff Eatery has launched Michelle’s Melt Burger in honor of the First Lady. The proceeds from its sale will go to DC Central Kitchen. The burger is a free range turkey burger with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and South Lawn Herb Garden mayo on a wheat bun. The burger joins one already on the menu for the First Lady’s husband.
Taylor Gourmet Too
The second location of Taylor Gourmet will open the week of October 5, in the CityVista condo complex. Mmm… sammiches.
