Eric Lewis

Industrial Jazz Group

>> The Industrial Jazz Group is an adventurous 17-piece band led by composer Andrew Durkin. Bored with the haughtyness of modern jazz, and the blandness of pop, the group describes its sound as “avant-garde party music,” trying to introduce humor into its eclectic sound. The band will be playing tonight at Twins Jazz. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> If you want a different brand of ear-opening music tonight, head over to the Bossa Bistro & Lounge, where Matta Gawa will team up with Kuan for an evening of electric and experimental music. Call 202-667-0088 for cover information. 8 p.m.

>> Three Stars alum Brad Linde comes to U-topia tonight to present Foreground Music: The Music of Lennie Tristano/Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh/Ted Brown. His quintet will play a selection of music by these noted jazz composers, and will include Sarah Hughes (alto), Rodney Richardson (gtr), Andrew Cox (bs), and Web Grant (drums). 9 p.m. No cover.

>> Tonight, Three Stars alum Wayna will perform a tribute to the great Billie Holiday at Blues Alley. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Unbuckled alum Matt Grason leads his live house band, House of Soul, on Thursday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. The group features Three Stars alum Charles Ostle on drums and monster keyboardist Jon Ozment. 10 p.m. $3

>> We at DCist have a lot of respect for trumpeter Terence Blanchard, who will begin a four night stand of nightly 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley on Thursday. Tickets are $35 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> California’s Slumgum incorporates jazz, free improvisation, world music, and contemporary classical music to create a sound that is wholly their own. Catch them at Twins Jazz on Thursday. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> Local mainstay and DCist fave Allyn Johnson will bring his piano wizardry to Jazz Night in Southwest on Friday, along with his gospel jazz outfit, Divine Order. The group features Young Lions drummer Quincy Phillips, saxophonist Tim Green, bassist Kris Funn, and a 6 person gospel choir. 6 to 9 p.m. $5

>> Pianist Eric Lewis is one of the most energetic performers you’ll ever see, and is opening a whole new audience to jazz by putting contemporary alt-rock and pop into a jazz context. He’s returning to HR-57 on Friday, but get there early because his shows are always packed. 9:30 p.m to 1 a.m. $20
