Via City Desk, it looks like former D.C. Board of Education member Jeff Smith is considering running against incumbent Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham (D). Smith is Executive Director of DC Voice, an education advocacy group.
Smith told the City Paper that he is ‘officially “exploring” a challenge,’ placing him in the company of Adams Morgan ANC commissioner Bryan Weaver. Unlike Weaver, Smith already has a web site up, making his potential bid at least appear a little more fully formed than just an exploration. His issues page lists priorities that include “Safer neighborhoods” (Community policing, more street lights, etc.); “More responsible development” (tax breaks for local businesses, encourage family-friendly businesses and restaurants, etc.); “Schools as the center of the community” (more public access to school facilities); and “Improved quality of life” (less trash and fewer homeless people).
Almost immediately after news of Smith’s maybe-candidacy broke, Graham campaign spokesperson Chuck Thies got in touch to offer this rather biting reaction:
“Exploring and campaigning are two different things. Campaigning takes hard work and commitment. Jeff won a 4 year seat on the School Board and quit less than halfway through his term. For the sake of those who might be interested in his 2010 candidacy, I hope he has the fortitude to honor their support,” Thies said.
CORREX: Bryan Weaver does indeed have his own web site.
