Photo by wojo4hitzWith today’s same sex marriage victory, national media are now focusing on how this hot-button issue will play out in our city. Not only does the District represent a success story in the fight for marriage equality, but it joins only a handful of states that have legalized the practice through legislative means.
But more than simply signaling a victory for equality, it’s likely to be a benefit to the larger cause of increased autonomy and, dare we say it, voting rights. How? Simple — there are literally hundreds of journalists and pundits today who are being forced to explain why our local legislation has to head to Congress for 30 days of review. And in the course of that explanation, there are bound to be people across the country who instinctively repeat what we’ve been saying all along: “Well, that’s dumb.”
