Sen. Max Baucus

Sen. Max Baucus

UPDATE 4:35 p.m. We’re now hearing the substance has been deemed harmless, and Baucus’s office has reopened.

The Associated Press is reporting that authorities are investigating a suspicious package of the unidentified white powder variety that was delivered to the office of Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.).

An Associated Press photographer at the scene, in the Hart Senate Office Building, heard officers say there was a threatening note with the package. Schneider would not confirm there was a note.

Baucus staff members were told they could not leave the suite of offices, and nobody was being allowed to enter.

Baucus of course was in the news all year long as the leader of the Senate Finance Committee’s health-care reform effort. No illnesses have been reported, and police say the substance is being tested.
