If the District ever had any southern charm, it’s apparently long gone. According to a nationwide study of happiness, the District ranks towards the bottom of the list, coming in at 37th. Locally, our neighbor to the north is even more unhappy than we are (Maryland, 40th) while our southern friends seem a good deal cheerier (Virginia, 28th). New Jersey, Connecticut and New York rounded out the bottom three, while Louisiana, Hawaii and Florida took top honors. The study compared subjective indicators from an annual survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control against objective indicators like climate, taxes, crime and commuting times to produce a measure of how happy the residents of the 50 states and the District are.
