Photo by Scott Ableman.Yesterday, I was mentally preparing myself to write about how Gilbert Arenas had gone and reneged on his ridiculous pledge to not to tweet until he got one million followers. Then, something much more controversial happened — allegedly, of course.
Here’s what we know so far:
- It’s important to remember that even before all of this came to light, Arenas was (and still is) at the center of an investigation into allegations that he brought handguns into the locker room of the Verizon Center. As you all know, doing this, inside the District, is a bad idea.
- Peter Vescey of the New York Post interrupted our black eyed peas with his incendiary report early Friday that claimed Arenas and Javaris Crittenton got into an altercation regarding a “gambling debt” in the locker room on Christmas Eve, allegedly drawing pistols on each other before things simmered down.
- “Hey, do you guys remember that the team’s name used to be the Bullets? Man, this stuff just writes itself!”
- Arenas then goes to practice, and tells Washington Post NBA reporter Michael Lee that Vecsey’s report is “not the real story,” and that he’s considering suing the New York Post.
- Arenas also decides that he’s going to handle the spin on Twitter, of all places, urging his suddenly burgeoning set of followers to “pls dont take me to serious” and joking that “i wake up this morning and seen i was the new JOHN WAYNE..lmao media is too funny.” The whole sequence of 140 character blasts, beginning with last night and including other topics including long-standing rumors about Arenas’ wife, is required reading; and of course, Mr. Steinberg’s got all the context you need.
- The Washington Post then says that a source claims that the argument between the two was about “who had the bigger gun.” Phew, well, at least it wasn’t gambling!
- Well, maybe. ESPN’s Marc Stein then reported last night that the dispute stems from a card game on the Wizards December 19 flight from Phoenix. According to Stein’s report, Arenas “placed three guns he owns on a chair near Crittenton’s locker stall and invited him to pick one before practice on Dec. 21.” Yowza.
