Snow is very disorienting! I wake up this morning to a world covered in bleak and IMs from my friend saying that I need to follow up on #shmoocon. What is a #shmoocon? Apparently Schmoocon is an annual East Coast hacker conference held IRL. This year, the District is hosting Schmoocon, and I have only kind things to say about Schmoocon because I do not want to end up with my planet hacked. But I do have unkind things to say about the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, where it’s being held. Attendee @nathanhamiel snapped this photo of massive damage inside what appears to be the hotel lobby. (DCist has more on a couple other roofs that have suffered some damage). When I called the hotel to confirm, I had the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced (outside of Comcast, of course). After being shuffled off onto several different agents, a woman in hotel security finally told me, “We do not give out any information to anybody about anything.” A person in the hospitality business hung up on me! In any event, @nathanhamiel re-posted his photo and clarified that a skylight had collapsed, not a portion of the roof.
