D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty announced at a press conference earlier this morning that a snow emergency will go into effect in the District at 4 p.m. this afternoon. As you’ve all learned by now, a snow emergency means that vehicles parked along snow emergency routes (download a list of those routes) will be ticketed and/or towed, and that taxi drivers are allowed to charge an extra 25 percent above normal rates.

Do make sure your car is moved off of snow emergency routes before 4 p.m.

The news comes just as WTOP is reporting some disconcerting news: apparently a full 25 percent of the District’s snow plows have broken down in one way or another over the past week, and the city is having trouble getting replacement parts. That’s really bad news. We’re also staring down the possibility of a serious salt shortage, though more salt is reportedly on its way to the city.
