Hard to believe spring is right around the corner, but the Obamas are here to make it seem more real: they’ve announced the date of this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. The popular annual event will take place on Monday, April 5.

Along with the old standbys (egg rolling, etc.), this year’s event is tied in to the First Lady’s mission to promote healthier eating and exercise habits among children. We’re all in favor of fewer diabetic kids, but this description makes us a little concerned Mrs. Obama may be out to suck the fun out of Easter, which is supposed to involve chocolate bunnies and jelly beans: “All of the activities will encourage children to lead healthy and active lives and follow the First Lady’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative.” Somehow that doesn’t sound like there will be nearly enough Peeps or malted chocolate easter eggs. Hmmmm.

Once again, the White House is doing that thing where people from all over the country can apply to attend, instead of just local Washington area families willing to camp out overnight for tickets. Last year, it really pissed them off! This year, hopefully, we’ve all gotten over ourselves at least a little bit.

The tickets will be distributed through an online lottery system (more details here), which anyone may sign up for between Feb. 25-28.
