Wizards 108, Timberwolves 99: Andray Blatche had a career-high 33 points, Mike Miller chipped in five big threes and JaVale McGee had a double-double as the Wizards defeated similarly-awful Minnesota last night, but come on: the big story was the three-team trade that shipped Antawn Jamison to Cleveland and officially closed the book on the Wizards’ multi-year Big Three experiment. Washington packaged Jamison with the recently-acquired Drew Gooden and, in return, acquired Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ $11.5 million expiring contract, and Al Thornton, who has averaged over 13 points per game in three years with the Clippers. Washington also got Cleveland’s 2010 first-round draft pick and the rights to prospect Emir Preldzic, which makes this deal seem almost great in comparison to last weekend’s desperate salary dump. The deal’s implications on Washington’s salary cap figure may even take a little bit of pressure off the Wiz when it comes to voiding Gilbert Arenas’ contract — at least from a financial standpoint. Of course, this meant trading Jamison, Washington’s captain, who wasn’t in much a mood to talk as he made his way out of the Verizon Center.
Well, then. You’d think a guy who’s heading to play with the most explosive player in the league and for one of the contenders for the league title would be a little more excited. But getting back to the point, the forgotten ones — Miller, Blatche, McGee, and so on — won tonight! You know, the shedding of expectation might just be the best thing that’s happened to this franchise in some time.
