DCmud is an indispensable and relentless cataloger of local real estate news, so we’ve got no reason to doubt the veracity of this report, which tells of hopes on the part of the elegant, historic Hay-Adams Hotel to build an additional floor to make room for a rooftop restaurant.
If plans are approved, the Hay Adams will offer what would easily be the best dining views over the White House, giving neighboring W a run for its money. The hotel already boasts an impressive view over the White House and onto the Mall from its position on the northern end of Lafayette Park.
Totally apart from the restaurant plans, which seems like a sure business bet, it’s that “impressive view” over the White House that makes us wonder. Establishing shots of the home of the executive branch filmed from the Hay-Adams roof have long been mainstays of films and television shows set inside the presidency, most notably The West Wing. But if there’s a restaurant up there, would film crews be more limited in their access? And even if they aren’t, would the angle of the shot be forever altered, given that it’ll be moved up a floor?
