WMATA on Wednesday let the public in on a project it’s been working on for a few months now — replacing each rail car identification number with a larger, more visible version.

The exterior signage has both been increased in size (from 2¼ inches tall to 5 inches) and moved to the top of cars (they used to be below operator’s windows). New interior numbers have also been added to train doors.

The transit agency said the new numbers will make it easier for customers, first responders and Metro personnel to identify a rail car in an emergency. Not mentioned by Metro: they’ll also make it easier to identify the aging, 1,000 series rail cars that, since the June 22 Red Line crash, many customers worry are less safe to ride in.

Metro says the whole project is costing them $162,000, and should be finished by this summer.
