Long View Gallery will have extended hours today, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., so stop by and see these great D.C. images from our contributors for the last time. They’re all for sale at pretty reasonable prices, so contact the gallery or me at heather@dcist.com if you’d like to take one home tonight. As for you photographers, we look forward to seeing more of your work in our Flickr pool. The next DCist Exposed contest opens in December!
Art News:
>> Earlier this month we mentioned that the Virginia budget may put their arts commission, well, out of commission. The final budget passed last week settled on a compromise — the Commission on the Arts survived, with only a 16 percent funding cut, which, in the big picture, could have been a lot worse.
>> Congrats to everyone who was recognized at the annual Mayor’s Art Awards on Monday night during a celebration at the The Historical Society of Washington, including Washington Post art writer Michael O’Sullivan, who was given the 2010 Mayor’s Special Recognition Award. Read the list of winners here.
Art Openings and Events:
>> We love it when art is both affordable and totally awesome, so you’ll find us at The Athenaeum in Alexandra this Sunday for Paper Cuts: The Art and Science of Rock Posters. Curated by Anthony Dihle, who organized last year’s Paper Jam at Civilian Art Projects, this new exhibit features exclusively D.C. area designers who created work for D.C. rock shows. Opening Sunday, 4 to 6 p.m., featuring live printmaking by Kristina Bilonick.
>> Visit the exhibit I Dream Awake by a pop-up project at the old Numark space, 625-627 E Street NW, starting this weekend. “With an emphasis on the development and exposure of high-quality contemporary artworks in innovative settings and locations, the project aims to develop and promote local DC talent alongside national talent. a pop-up project will host pop-up group exhibitions, lectures and events at venues throughout the DC area,” which sounds like what a lot of groups in the city are doing these days. See what it’s all about at the reception Friday, 6 to 9 p.m.
