About 100 supporters gathered at the Franklin D. Reeves Municipal Center Tuesday afternoon to watch D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray file his paperwork to enter the 2010 mayoral contest. Gray submitted the requisite signatures at approximately 2:20 p.m.
Chants of “Run, Vincent, Run!” accompanied Gray as he entered the building and made his way up to the fourth floor. Once the task was completed, they changed to “Win, Vincent, Win!”
Standing amid a modest number of freshly printed blue and gray campaign signs, Gray declined to make a big speech once he exited the building. “As you know, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk,” he told reporters. “Today is a day to celebrate.”
At the same time, Gray’s campaign launched a web site, a Twitter feed, and a Facebook page. The main campaign site doesn’t have much to it yet, just a biography and a form to volunteer.
Back at the Reeves Center, the most Gray offered about his mayoral platform was boilerplate material.
“I absolutely love this city,” Gray said. “But the reality is, we can do better.”
Jason Goodman, an HVAC mechanic from Ward 8, came out to support Gray, but not necessarily because of anything Gray has said he stands for.
“I am just so soured toward Fenty right now,” Goodman said. “I think he’s been making a lot of decisions behind closed doors. I think the city needs a change.”
