Ward 2 D.C. Council member Jack Evans is officially running for Council Chair, but there’s nothing official about a Twitter account that popped up Wednesday, which was, at least for a time, presumed to be a part of his campaign.

Evans spokesperson Andrew Huff was forced to send out a press release Thursday making sure reporters and voters knew that @JackForChair was not the real deal.

“Please ignore these tweets, as they do not originate from Councilmember Evans or our office,” Huff said. Evans’ office is trying to get the account removed from Twitter, according to Huff.

The fake Twitter account started out plausibly enough, with messages like “After a long, proud history of serving DC’s finest neighborhoods, I am running for Chair of our illustrious DC Council.” But it became clear fairly quickly that the author was not genuine.
