Photo courtesy Paul RuppertThe massive Nuclear Summit heading to the Washington Convention Center next week is bringing along with it major road closures, barricades, checkpoints, bus rerouting, the shuttering of an entire Metro station, and all sorts of other headaches for the Mt. Vernon Square, Shaw and Chinatown neighborhoods. For all the specific details on what will be closed and when, see our earlier post and map.
The first barricades were already going up along 7th and 9th streets on Friday afternoon (as pictured), and neighborhood businesses are busy right now deciding whether they will bother to open on Monday and Tuesday at all. Business owners we’ve spoken to say the Secret Service has asked them to provide photos and social security numbers of any employees who need to be allowed inside the secure zone. Not to mention, the only potential customers most retail establishments will theoretically have access to will be summit attendees and zone residents and employees — no one else will be allowed to pass through the perimeter. Given all that, we’re starting to compile a list of who will be open and who won’t. We’ll continue to update this list as we hear back from owners.
- First Cup Cafe (900 M Street NW) plans to be open for regular business hours on Monday and Tuesday.
- EFN Lounge/Motley Bar (1319 9th Street NW) will be closed both days.
- Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery & Cafe (1239 9th St. NW) plans to remain open both days, and hopes to serve up plenty of sweet potato pie to summit attendees.
- Tobacco shop TG Cigar (1118 9th St. NW) will open both days, provided all goes according to plan.
- The Passenger (1021 7th Street NW) will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Says co-owner Paul Ruppert: “Although some businesses might benefit from this Summit, we will certainly lose a lot of money as will our staff.”
- Modern Liquors (1200 9th Street NW) plans to be open both days, as of Friday afternoon, although an employee told us they thought it was possible that could change, depending on how things go over the weekend.
- Old Dominion Brewhouse (1219 9th Street NW) plans to be open both days to provide beers and brews to hungry summiteers. Same goes for the adjacent Chan’s Mongolian Grill and Tokyo Sushi.
- Giant Food (1414 8th Street NW) will be open for business as usual.
- Upscale restaurant Corduroy (1122 9th Street NW) does plan to open for dinner service on Monday and Tuesday as of Friday afternoon, but anyone with reservations who does not have access to the secure zone would be wise to check with the restaurant about logistics.
- Doggie daycare providers WagTime (1232 9th Street NW) plan to remain open both days, and are working out a system to pick up animals via bus outside the zone. Customers should call ahead to inquire about how to arrange for drop-off and pickup.
- Lunar Massage (1101a 5th Street NW) will be open on Tuesday, but closed Monday as usual.
- Azi’s Cafe (1336 9th Street NW) will be open both days as usual.
- The employees at Subway (1127 7th Street NW) say they still haven’t been told whether they are working on Monday and Tuesday. They may not find out whether the store will be open until Sunday, they said Friday.
- Acadiana (901 New York Ave. NW) will be open both days, but its valet service will be moved to the corner of 10th and K NW.
- The BP gas station (1317 9th Street NW) will be open both days.
