D.C. police and emergency crews racked up nearly 52,000 hours of overtime during April’s Nuclear Security Summit, which adds up to $4.4 million, Bill Myers reports in the Examiner. The White House has already promised to reimburse the District for the costs, as well it should.

What we’d still like to figure out is whether the economic impact of having the summit in the middle of downtown was a net benefit or not. Given that some local businesses in the security zone had to shut down completely for two days, and most of those diplomatic hotel guests likely didn’t have to pay sales taxes on their rooms, it’s hard to see how it could have been much of a boon, if it all.
