Yesterday marked the official deadline to return 2010 Census forms via mail. So how’d we do? It was but five days ago that DCist noticed that the District was lagging behind its Census participation of ten years ago by about five percent. But it looks like the efforts of the folks over at DC Counts have paid off in getting some folks to remove filling out and sending the form from their to-do lists: thanks to the Census’ super nifty response rate map, we can now report that Washington’s 2010 Census participation rate has at least matched 2000’s at 66 percent. That figure is under the national participation rate of 69 percent, but is not too shabby in comparison to other urban areas like New York City (56 percent), Boston (58 percent), Philadelphia (60 percent) and Baltimore (63 percent).

Around the District, Virginia also matched their 2000 figure, hitting 73 percent. Maryland didn’t fare so well, notching 71 percent, three points lower than their 2000 performance. Wisconsin currently leads all states with a 78 percent response rate.

Official figures will be released in early May, and Census takers will begin going door-to-door to collect information from non-respondents on May 1. Will you be expecting a visit?
