Fresh from DCist’s inbox, At-large D.C. Council member and Council Chair candidate Kwame Brown has sent out his official Earth Day message, and it’s … Twitter! Brown, who has been active on Twitter for a few months now, calls for “people across the world to send out 24,860 tweets, a number equal to circumference of the planet, in honor of Earth Day.” We’re going to assume that’s 24,860 people sending one tweet each, and not 24,860 per person.

Kwame Calls for 24,860 Tweets to Honor Earth Day

WASHINGTON – Today, At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown called for people across the world to send out 24,860 tweets, a number equal to circumference of the planet, in honor of Earth Day. Councilmember Brown believes that this will help send a message of hope that we can work together to safeguard our environment and preserve it for generations.

“Future generations are counting on us to make tough decisions that will protect the environment,” said Councilmember Brown. “We must be unified in our determination to take action, even if it means we must make sacrifices. Preserving the air we breathe and the water we drink could create great opportunities for innovation and a new green economy.”

“If we each do something small on Earth Day, we can have a big impact on the environment,” said Ben Bixby, co-founder and CEO of DC based Earth Aid. “Switch to environmentally friendly light bulbs and fix leaky faucets. Not only will it save energy but pennies will add up to dollars and keep more money in your pocket.” Visit Earth Aid’s website www.earthaid.net. to sign up for their free program that rewards you for saving energy.

Understanding the power of social networking to spread positive messages, Councilmember Brown sent out the following tweet this morning:

“Calling for 24,860 to follow @earthdaynetwork in honor of Earth Day.”
