When TV mega star Oprah Winfrey isn’t dishing with Rielle Hunter on the private lives of former presidential candidates, she has something else on her mind: text messaging.

Specifically, she’s waging her own one-woman (albeit with a pretty power megaphone) campaign to stop drivers from texting and using cell phones while driving. And she wants more people to sign up for her “No Phone Zone” pledge.

The national event Friday found a local angle when she took her Chicago-based show to the District (sort of). Longtime friend Gayle King hosted a remote portion from the Newseum on Pennsylvania Ave, while talking with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about dangerous driving. LaHood stated at the rally 6,000 people died in 2007 from texting and driving.

The campaign seems to have started at the beginning of the year. Oprah’s website has dedicated significant attention to the topic. If you don’t watch Oprah’s talk show, no matter — she’s reaching far and wide for the cause through other media, such as the New York Times op-ed page.

Visit Oprah’s website to sign up for her pledge, unless you’re reading this from your mobile on the road.
