George HuguelyUniversity of Virginia senior and men’s lacrosse player George Huguely has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Yeardley Love, 22, a fourth-year student who also played lacrosse at the university. The Charlottesville Daily-Progress reported this morning that Huguely, who is a native of Chevy Chase, Md. and attended the Landon School in Bethesda, stands accused of murdering Love. Love was found dead in an off-campus apartment early this morning — the two student athletes were reportedly in a relationship.
Most local media coverage is currently focusing on a 2006 Washington Post profile that featured Huguely, then a senior at Landon, during the Duke lacrosse scandal in which several players were accused of sexually assaulting a woman (all charges against the Duke players were later dropped). The piece includes an incredibly eerie quote from Huguely’s father stating that players “always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.” Terribly sad, but certainly a story that we’ll be hearing much more about in the coming weeks.
