Roast pork, black beans and rice with ripe plantains at Mio Dish of the Week: Roast pork, black beans and rice with ripe plantains
Where: Mio
Mio Restaurant has gone through a lot of chef changes since it first opened in 2006. But the restaurant seems to have settled in to a comfortable groove.
The roast pork dish ($17) on Mio’s lunch menu has a wonderful mix of flavors. On a recent visit, the pork was fork-tender with a tomato-y marinade. Any dryness was easily overcome with the accompanying black beans and rice. Unlike most black beans and rice dishes, which can be heavy and pasty, these provided a sweet and moist foil to the rest of the plate. The onions, peppers, and cilantro on top added a bit of a bite, and the tartness of the plantains rounded out the dish. The flavors of the dish hit every note, and meld together really well.
If you can’t make it for lunch, the restaurant hosts Puerto Rican Fridays. The Friday menu features a number of traditional Puerto Rican dishes.
