WTOP is reporting that D.C. Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of Alonte Sutton.

Omare Ishmael Cotton, 28, has been charged with first degree murder in the crime.

The body of Sutton, 18, was found Sunday in a wooded area near the 200 block of Newcomb Street SE. Sutton attended Ballou Senior High School and had twice worked as an intern for the D.C. Council.

Family members have said that Sutton was involved in a dispute with a man over whether Sutton would give the man’s girlfriend a ride someplace. The man later returned with a gun and shot Sutton.

D.C. Police are currently investigating the department’s own response to the killing. The incident between Sutton and Cotton allegedly took place on Saturday, and police were called to the scene for a report of the sound of gunfire. But as the Washington Post has reported, Sutton’s body was not found by police until the following day, prompting the internal investigation into whether the officers’ response was adequate.
