A man riding a bicycle was shot and critically injured Tuesday afternoon in Marvin Gaye Park, WRC/NBC4 reports. The shooting took place around 1 p.m. Tuesday, not far from the park entrance at Fitch Place and Division Avenue NE. The victim was reportedly shot in the head. No word from police on any suspect or motive in the case so far.

The shooting can’t help but bring to mind the bad old days of the park, back when it was called Watts Branch Park. The park was rededicated and named after legendary singer Marvin Gaye in 2006, following a years-long clean-up and restoration effort. Since then, the park has become better known for hosting community events, like the Marvin Gaye Music Festival, than for the drug-related violence that plagued the spot in the 1980s.
