D.C. police have closed 16th Street NW between S and R streets for a suspicious package investigation. MPD spokesperson Lt. Nicholas Breul said this was the second suspicious package police had responded to in the area this morning. No details were available on the nature of the package. That block of 16th Street is directly adjacent to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry headquarters.

UPDATE 10:45 a.m. The package has been deemed safe. WMATA spokesperson Ron Holzer says the package was located in the vicinity of 16th and R streets NW at around 9 a.m., and that Metro Transit Police were asked to assist. Initial reports indicated S buses were rerouted around the incident, and that no buses were offloaded, according to Holzer, but that account does not match those of our commenters, several of whom say they were offloaded and forced to walk around the incident. The package was not on a Metrobus, according to Holzer.
