Think D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is used to getting booed by now?

In April, there were boos at his post-South Capitol shooting press conference. Then there were boos at Opening Day at Nationals Park.

Today, the mayor received yet another round of boos, this time from students and parents at Dunbar Senior High School’s commencement ceremony.

WJLA/ABC7 reports that these most recent boos were apparently due to a perception that Fenty may have arranged to have his political rival, D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray, bumped from the commencement speaker slot.

Both Mayor Fenty and Council Chairman Vincent Gray appeared at the event. Gray said he had initially been invited to deliver the commencement address, but was told a few weeks ago that he would only deliver welcoming remarks.

Gray, a Dunbar graduate who is challenging Fenty in the September Democratic mayoral primary, suspects politics determined who actually spoke. His spokesperson, Doxie McCoy, says she believes Gray’s initial invite came from a panel of students and teachers.

Video posted to WJLA’s website shows Fenty attempting to quiet the boos, saying “Thank you so much” and “Good morning, everyone.” Which leads us to wonder, is there actually a good strategy to employ when you’re getting served up a bunch of boos? Has anyone, anywhere ever been able to handle this sort of thing gracefully?
