No surprise here as the Washington Wizards selected John Wall as the #1 draft pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. The SEC Player of the Year was one of five University of Kentucky Wildcats selected in the first round as Leonsis and Co. hope to kickoff a new era for the Wizards franchise. In fact, the organization is already selling “Wall: Game Changer” t-shirts. I mean, no point in wasting time, right? The Wizards have scheduled a meet and greet with Wall at 11:30 a.m. today at the Verizon Center.

Despite having the first selection of the draft, the Wizards were far from being done in building up their roster, particularly during the first round. Not only did Washington trade for Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich and the 17th overall pick (who turned out to be France’s Kevin Seraphin) for a future second-round choice, but also acquired Clemson’s Trevor Booker, the Timberwolves first-round choice, and Hamady N’diaye by giving up their 30th and 35th selections.

In terms of local talent, Georgetown sophomore Greg Monroe was selected seventh overall by the Detroit Pistons and is the latest Hoya to join the NBA ranks. The power forward from Louisiana will most likely create an immediate impact when he joins the team as he will definitely add some much-needed size to the Pistons roster.

And finally, Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez, who perhaps had the most emotional reaction of the evening, was selected 28th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. Vasquez had several workouts with the team prior to the draft and, despite his lack of athleticism, had impressed scouts enough to earn a first-round pick. The ACC Player of the Year is the first Terrapin to be drafted in the first round since 2002.
