Photo by Jess JThere’s been a lot said about the summer youth employment program: it’s wasteful, it’s make-work, it’s just for political points, and on and on. Of course, there is some good to come of it. Like how kids learn how the financial system works.
Overheard of the Week
On the S9 bus to Silver Spring around 5 pm:
Three teenage girls are discussing how they get paid for their summer jobs.
Girl 1: “So, you’ll get a check from D.O.E.S.”
Girl 2: “What’s a check?”
Girl 1: [silence] “You don’t know what a check is?”
Girl 3: “It’s, like, a piece of paper…”
Girl 1: “Yeah, and you, like, take it to the bank or an ATM and they give you money.”
Girl 2: “I don’t know how to do that.”
Girl 1: “Just give it to your Dad.”
A few minutes later after having a rather loud conversation about their different schools and the benefits of public versus private schools.
Girl 2: [who had already stated she goes to a private school] “I think public schools are better, but my Dad says that I have to go to [name] private school.”
Girl 1: “Public schools are totally better. You learn so much more stuff…you learn what a check is.”
After the jump, Phish, Baltimore, and airplanes.
