View Potential Wal-Mart Site in a larger map

Will us Washingtonians finally get the chance to submit our hilariously crazy images to People of Walmart? Maybe! Jonathan O’Connell has new details on Wal-Mart’s years-long push to open an outpost in the District, quoting sources who say that the Arkansas retail giant is “expected” to sign a lease by this fall for a site located on New York Avenue NE near the intersection of Bladensburg Road NE. O’Connell notes that the 11-acre parcel of land, currently occupied by several used auto parts stores, wouldn’t require Wal-Mart to pursue zoning alterations or hassle the city for money, since it is sizable enough already to fit the large, flat parking lot and enormous square-footage that Wal-Marts demand.

We’ll be interested in hearing how the company expects to prevent that intersection — which is, on its day, already kind of a traffic ordeal — from being jammed 24/7, especially on the weekends and during rush hour. On the other hand, there are a large number of neighborhoods around the site — which borders Mount Olivet Cemetery and the National Arboretum — which probably wouldn’t mind having the kind of one-stop shopping that those of us who live near the Target in Columbia Heights have now come to take for granted.
