They say ignorance is bliss and perhaps visiting D.C. Department of Health’s new foray into transparency isn’t for the faint of heart. For the adventuresome souls among us, D.C. health officials have put health inspections notices from the past three years online. “This website was developed so you may learn more about the food establishments from the perspective of safe food handling, or food safety,” says a statement on the site.

You can browse through the listings or search the database by name, zipcode, ward or establishment type. On a cursory glance, the reports are shown as either website text or as a PDF file, which means searching for closings or compiling our own statistics on specific violations isn’t possible at the moment — you know some food safety wonk will want to know how many spots are lax with the hand washing.

According to the DCDOH, the majority of D.C.’s food establishments receive two routine unannounced food safety inspections per year, resulting in about 5,000 inspections annually. There are plans to add more reports prior to the past three years, while new reports will be uploaded as they become available.
