Good morning, Washington. The Guardian Angels might be upping their patrols on the Green Line in the wake of Friday night’s brawl, but D.C. police won’t be, unless Metro requests them to do so. Chief Cathy Lanier reiterated to the Post that MPD already maintains a sizable police presence in Chinatown on Friday nights. But there’s a disconnect in the article — Lanier says that the 70-person brawl began on a train (and hence is the primary responsibility of Metro Transit Police), while Metro Chairman Peter Benjamin believes that the “incident started outside Metro and officers at the station immediately called for help.” The facts lean Lanier’s way, as Metro Transit Police Deputy Chief David Webb said that the youth who boarded a Green Line train at Gallery Place-Chinatown and started fighting were “boisterous” on the platform, but nothing unusual. We have to ask: how would more MPD patrols on the streets around the Metro entrance at Chinatown help prevent this particular type of crime, when, by all indications, there wasn’t any signs of illegal activity until the youth had boarded the train?

Schools Struggling To Meet No Child Left Behind Standards: In the Examiner, Leah Fabel reports that thanks to higher standards, only 15 D.C. schools met their No Child Left Behind adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals, a steep decline compared the last two years. 29 schools met the standards last year, and 38 did so in 2008. Only eight DCPS elementary schools improved enough to attain AYP. Of course, it makes sense that more schools would fail to meet standards after the goals were raised, but it’s still discouraging to hear that only eight elementary schools in the entire District made the grade.

Police Investigating Possible Abduction: MPD is seeking information about a possible abduction that occurred on the 2500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE late on Sunday night. In a video released by the police, a man appears to be forcing a woman into a blue Dodge Charger. Police say that they have not received a missing person report for a woman matching the description of the one on the tape, but that they aren’t ruling anything out. If you have information, you can contact police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME.
