Now that the bubble of excitement surrounding New York trio The Vivian Girls has waxed and waned, they’ve given music fans another reason to get excited: they’re releasing a new album. And if Sunday night’s set at Comet Ping Pong was any indicator, their new material might elevate them above their flash-in-the-pan status.

The attention that the trio attracted in 2007 and 2008 was partially due to the combination of their shambolic lo-fi songs, appreciation for reverb and surprisingly tight harmonies. This made their eponymous debut album a surprise underground hit, but it also raised questions as to whether the girls’ simple two-minute punk songs were all they were capable of. Their inconsistent performances and mediocre second album — aptly titled Everything Goes Wrong — did nothing to alleviate these questions. Understandably, much of Sunday’s set not culled from their new material came from their first album.
