UPDATE (2:58 p.m.): According to sources who are on the scene of the accident, the pedestrian who was hit by the truck is an elderly woman. She is reportedly undergoing surgery and is in critical condition. We’ve received word that there has been a pedestrian incident near the Waterfront Metro station. Details are scant, but M Street SW between 4th and 6th Streets SW has apparently been closed to traffic due to a police investigation into an accident in which a person was critically injured. First District and Major Crash units are currently on the scene, and MPD Assistant Chief Diane Groomes states in an email that the individual was hit by a garbage truck. We’ll report additional details when we can get them. [Ed. note: This post originally stated the accident took place in the Southeast quadrant. We have now learned it has occurred in the Southwest quadrant. We have corrected the information, and deeply regret the initial error.]
