For those who like their humor dark, D.C. United’s 2010 has been a comedy of errors. So its hardly a surprise that the opening goal in Saturday night’s game against the Columbus Crew came from a whiff on a clearance attempt by goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Guillermo Barros Schelotto — whose penalty kick knocked United out of the U.S. Open Cup last Wednesday — hopped on Hamid’s howler to score the only goal of the game, an ugly affair that the Crew eventually won, 1-0. It was the 15th time that United had failed to score a goal in league play, matching the record for scoring futility set by Toronto in 2007.

United’s offensive struggles sunk to a new low on Saturday: United couldn’t even manage a single shot on goal over the ninety minutes. Columbus was barely better going forward — they only managed two efforts on goal themselves — but they gladly took the gift Hamid gave them and got out of the District with two wins over the home team. United continued their inability to find their way out of a hole — D.C. has actually won all three of its matches this season in which they scored first. They are but 1-16-1 when they concede first, as they did on Saturday.
