WTOP’s Mark Segraves tweeted this morning that Fenty is seeking the official nod from President Barack Obama in the District’s Democratic primary. “Fenty tells WTOP he’s called WH asking for POTUS to endorse him prior to primary. Fenty won’t say who he spoke with, but confirms request,” noted Segraves. “Fenty says he doesn’t expect POTUS to make an appearance, but hopes for a written endorsement he can use,” he also reported.
Fenty endorsed Obama in 2007, and the District handed Obama over 93 percent of its votes in the 2008 election. In early 2009, the two sat down for lunch at Ben’s Chili Bowl and played basketball, and earlier this year they posed for photos at a attended a Georgetown basketball game. (Obama and mayoral challenger Vince Gray greeted each other at a recent Mystics game.) Additionally, it was just two weeks ago that Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Mayor Fenty for an event promoting healthy living.
