Around 10:30 a.m. this morning, a Red Line Metro train, heading in the direction of Shady Grove, was taken out of service after smoke was discovered on the tracks outside of the Brookland-CUA station. Those who were on the train were told that the train was out of service and that they had to leave the train — one person who left the train told DCist that the smoke smelled like “really bad burning rubber.” Many passengers didn’t know if the train was on fire or not, and smoke was highly visible.

WMATA spokesperson Ron Holzer tells DCist that the problem was a brake malfunction under one of the cars which caused the smoke

Metro has dubbed the disruption as a train malfunction, but we haven’t been able to confirm what was actually on fire and creating the smoke. (It should be noted that small fires on the tracks are hardly an uncommon occurrence.) Single tracking was put into effect to move two trains around the malfunction; both tracks were restored to full service at 11:33 a.m.
