Good morning, Washington. Lots of news today, and to be honest, it’s too damn hot on a Fall day for me to be writing any type of introduction. Davy DCist would not approve of this weather.

Teresa Lewis Executed: It’s been almost a century since Virginia executed a woman, but no longer — convicted murderer Teresa Lewis was put to death last night, reports the Post. Lewis was convicted for plotting to kill her husband and stepson eight years ago, but her death sentence was criticized because of concerns regarding her mental capacity and the fact that neither of her two co-conspirators faced the same fate.

Metro Now Safer, Says NTSB: The head of the National Transportation Safety Board testified during a congressional hearing yesterday that Metro is more safe now than it was leading up to the June 2009 accident that left nine people dead, writes WTOP. According to Deborah Hersman, Metro has implemented over two dozen safety recommendations proposed by NTSB over the last year, including hiring a new safety officer and setting up a safety hotline Metro employees can use to report problems.

A Picture of Rhee is Worth 1,000 Speculations: Was D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee near tears after her meeting with presumptive Mayor-elect Vince Gray yesterday? Was she grim-faced? Shaken? These were all speculations that circled after she refused to comment on the content of the meeting, so much so that a Post reporter had to retract a claim that Rhee looked like she was about to cry during a brief post-meeting press conference with Gray. But was she? See for yourself and speculate. (The City Paper’s also got video.)

AG Holder Voted for Gray: Amidst all the hoopla surrounding the Gray-Rhee Summit, WTOP caught an interesting little tidbit from Gray’s morning meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder — he voted for Gray. Beyond being the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, Holder is a Ward 3 resident, a part of town that overwhelmingly sided with Mayor Adrian Fenty in the September 14 primary.

Briefly Noted: Harry Jaffe thinks D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is gone … Isolation of detained D.C. youth increasesShots fired at police during early morning carjacking … Major fire in Manassas.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2009, Council member Jim Graham’s (D-Ward 1) chief of staff Ted Loza was arrested and a former DCist editor saw a tree collapse on his house. In 2008, the primary results from one precinct had to be recounted and then presidential candidate Barack Obama refused to delay a debate in response to the financial crisis.
