UPDATE: Based on Twitter reports, escalators at Foggy Bottom have reopened, but a heavy police presence remains. The scene is likely to remain messy for a bit. If you can get on the Orange and Blue lines at Farragut West, that will likely be a smoother experience.

The GW Hatchet reports that a man was stabbed outside of the entrance to the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station around 11 a.m. this morning, causing massive backups at the entrance and drawing a large police presence. Apparently a man, who had been released from George Washington University Hospital this morning, began acting erratically and grabbed someone outside the station entrance. The person who was grabbed then pulled out a knife and cut the man before fleeing the scene.

An emailer to the DCist tipline tells us that the State Department is circulating an email to its employees which describes the Foggy Bottom station as “a crime scene.” There is apparently one escalator in use going up and down at the station, but there are large lines trying to exit. The email also states that there is security officers riding the Metro, ostensibly to look for the person who pulled the knife.

We’d recommend avoiding the station early this afternoon if possible, until the situation clears up a little bit.
