Poof, now we’re in Ireland.I suppose we can file this under “this has nothing to do with D.C., but is still a massively fun way to waste time at work, which is very important to D.C. office workers.” Friend of DCist Laura Olin passed along a link to Globe Genie, which appears to be a product of one Joe McMichael, and is hosted under an MIT web address. The site allows its users to jump randomly to one Google Street View around the world — you can select any combination of continents (including Antarctica!), hit “Teleport” and see where you end up.
It’s incredibly addictive, no? Since most of the United States is covered by Street View, we highly recommend deselecting North America and taking a spin. It’s also fun to check off all continents, then hit the randomizer five times and see where you end up; on a recent trip, I stopped next to a parked pickup truck in Chattanooga, Tennessee, next to a corn field in Forest City, Illinois, at a train crossing in Jacksonville, Florida, along a deserted single-lane rural road in Dorset, United Kingdom, and at strip mall parking lot outside of Madison, Wisconsin. Where’d you end up, commenters? Anyone actually land around D.C. on a five-click trip?
